The Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office is dedicated to providing accurate information to the public and the media. It is our goal to keep you informed on the status of high profile court cases. Below are our most recent media advisories and press releases issued by this office.
Marilyn Hite Ross ~ “I feel it incumbent as State’s Attorney to respond to the postings on August 2, 2020 on State Representative John Cabello’s page relating to recent civil unrest in Winnebago County. We live in a law and order society. Anyone who would suggest that individuals break the law indeed becomes complicit in the unlawful activity. Clearly this type of rhetoric and dialogue is unacceptable and does not further productive conversations to resolve and address positive change going forward. These posts do not reflect the sentiment of my office nor local law enforcement leaders that I work with. Please be assured that the Office of the Winnebago County State’s Attorney will continue to enforce the laws of the State of Illinois and also provide safe venues for peaceful demonstrations.”
The Office of the Winnebago County State’s Attorney has been contacted by individuals expressing concern over the release of inmates from the Illinois Department of Corrections. As Winnebago County State’s Attorney, I have expressed my concerns to the Illinois Prison Review Board regarding the premature release of violent offenders into our community. There have been several inmates released through commutation of sentences and medical furlough by Governor Pritzker along with the Illinois Prison Review Board early release provisions. The granting of such furloughs under Governor Pritzker’s Disaster Proclamation triggers my obligation to notify the victims pursuant to the Rights of Crime Victim’s Act and the Illinois Constitution. The lack of appropriate notice to my office regarding the early release of these individuals hinders my ability to notify victims and family members in a timely manner. As Winnebago County State’s Attorney, I will continue to oppose the early release and furlough of violent offenders back into the Winnebago County community.
The Office of the Winnebago County State’s Attorney has been contacted by many individuals expressing concern for the safety of individuals incarcerated in the Winnebago County Jail as well as individuals who may be arrested or detained in the future. The memo below is in response to their concern.
